Panel “Innovation in Healthcare: How Meaningful Use is Impacting the Evolution of Healthcare”

While the current HITECH incentives and penalties will raise the bar of meaningful use for information systems across the country, it may cause some challenging long term challenges to the meaningful use of data.  Providers will certainly begin to make meaningful use of information systems as defined by the law, but will they be able to assure the meaningful use of clinical data to continue to drive our national healthcare to the highest quality at a sustainable cost?  This is an issue confronted by our nation’s leading healthcare organizations as they push the envelope in defining care models and leveraging technology to improve care.

This session will discuss:

  1. Maintaining innovation in healthcare
  2. Innovating while complying with Meaningful Use
  3. Using MU as a guide, not a goal

Panel "TeleX: Taking Care Beyond the Hospital Walls” Panel “The hCloud at 30,000 Feet: Cloud Computing Solutions for Mobile Healthcare”

TeleX is the convergence of healthcare technologies that provide care in non-traditional settings.  While telex is a continually evolving concept, current technologies include:  telehealth, telemedicine, mHealth, wireless health, remote patient monitoring and more.  As technology improves and access expands, these concepts continue to overlap as do opportunities for interoperability.

This session will discuss:

  1. Coordinating technologies for better care
  2. Implementation strategies
  3. Trends in healthcare
  4. What’s next?

Healthcare cloud (aka, hCloud) computing offers a way for mobile devices to provide practical and valuable solutions for the capture, storage and processing of healthcare information. These technologies provide value across a range of healthcare applications, from decision support systems for frontline care providers to health sensor tracking.

This panel will demonstrate that many remotely deployed applications that work on a laptop can also work on a mobile device in remote or virtual settings by using cloud computing through wireless technology. Because many mobile devices are not tied to wireless networks or landlines, they have the ability to penetrate otherwise inaccessible communities with point of care technologies.

Panel “Preventative Security for Electronic Personal Health Information (ePHI)”  Panel “Business Intelligence in Health Care: Using Smart Data to Improve Outcomes”

The current security risks for ePHI are well known and HIPAA updates have been brought to maintain security in both policy and in action.  That said, the risks today are not the risks we faced just five year ago or those we will face five years from now.

As new technologies evolve and access to HIPAA protected data becomes more prevalent, it is critical to have a security plan in place that will act proactively as new technologies are implemented and new stakeholders are incorporated into the healthcare landscape.

This session will help participants:

  1. Establish a long-term security plan
  2. Identify Risk
  3. Mitigate legal exposure
  4. Understand breach prevention & protocol
  5. Understand the economic impact of an ePHI breach
Moderator: Jayne Bassler, VP & CIO, Florida Hospital – iHT² Advisory Board Member

, Chief Information Officer, Hospice of the Sun Coast iHT² Advisory Board Member
Julie Meadows-Keefe, Of Counsel, Grossman, Furlow & Bayo, LLC
Leon Hoover, Chief Information Officer, Hendry Regional Medical Center

As EHRs become an industry standard, the focus is shifting from strategies for implementation to those that leverage data to improve the quality and safety of care.  Analyzing the massive amounts of granular data produced by EHRs is a critical piece to understanding how we can make those improvements.  In addition to improving outcomes, analytics has the potential to drastically reduce costs in healthcare and align IT with a provider’s business strategy.

This session will discuss:

  1. Capturing meaningful data
  2. What do we do with this data?

Panel “Connecting Points of Care: Leveraging EHRs to Make HIE Work”

While the debate economic feasibility is still underway, numerous case-studies and pilot projects have demonstrated the successful implementation of health IT programs and the significant benefits to outcomes, safety, and healthcare costs.  In order to maximize the benefits on a national level, healthcare stakeholders must begin sharing this information – in real time.  While there is significant work to be done before all providers are able to share information in this manner and on a national level, there are many steps that can be taken now to improve communication and coordination of care on a local and regional level.

This session will discuss:

  1. Getting started with HIE
  2. Intermediate steps to HIE on a national scale
  3. Cost structure and savings of electronic information exchange
  4. Meaningful Use requirements

1:15 - 2:15pm
Panel “Accountable Care & Analytics: Driving Accountability through Information”

Regardless of the model for healthcare delivery reform, the end goal is for providers to efficiently and effectively manage care delivery. This includes providing high quality, safe care with few medical errors and strong clinical and financial outcomes. Although similar risk sharing schemes were tried in the past, none proved successful due to insufficient cost savings or poor clinical outcomes. For ACOs to survive this initial phase and become a legitimate model for the delivery of care, providers must become data driven organizations.

In this session participants will:
  1. Explore different models for healthcare delivery reform
  2. Review strategies to make providers data driven organizations
  3. Learn how to apply ACO business intelligence techniques across the healthcare continuum
