Panel Discussion “Accountable Care Organizations: Taking on Risk & Identifying Critical Tools”

ACO’s create incentives for health care providers to work together to treat an individual patient across care settings – including doctor’s offices, hospitals, and long-term care facilities.  Medicare incentives will reward ACO’s that lower growth in health care costs while meeting performance standards on quality of care and putting patients first.  Many health care providers have a significant gap in infrastructure and funding before becoming an Accountable Care Organizations.  Like any arduous process, we have to start somewhere!

This session will address the following core areas:

  1. Necessary infrastructure to facilitate data capture and secure electronic patient health information
  2. Patient engagement & PHR deployment
  3. Data integration across the continuum of care
  4. Providing ubiquitous information to leverage clinical decision support tools and engage patients
  5. Transitioning administrative systems and payment models

Panel “Breach Avoidance: Strategies to Protect Patient Data” Panel “Preparing for the Future: Organizational Strategies for the Transition to ICD-10”

According to a recent study, the average organizational cost of a data breach increased to $4 million, up 18% from last year, and cost an average of $156 per compromised record.  Costs associated with security breaches are on the rise, potentially causing damages to finances not to mention public relations and liability factors.  With the continued increase in data availability, it is more important than ever to have a comprehensive security plan.

This session will discuss:

  1. User compliance
  2. Countering external threats
  3. Eliminating gaps in protection
  4. Implementation of a proactive security plan
The transition to ICD-10 is a business-enabled compliance mandate that will provide better data for measuring health care service quality, safety, and the efficacy of care by allowing clinical IT systems to record far more specific and rich diagnostic information. The complete ICD-10 code set contains more than 155,000 codes, compared to only 17,000 in the ICD-9 set.

This massive undertaking presents a number of challenges which this session will address, including:

  1. ICD-10 as a system-wide upgrade: financial, clinical, HIM, IT
  2. Strategies to prepare your staff for a more medically complex coding language
  3. Ensuring the transition will improve outcomes, streamline operations and reduce costs

Panel “Mobile Health: Leveraging Data at the Point of Care” Panel “HIE Performance: Defining Your Objectives & Measuring Progress”

Wireless technology in health care has two things going for it: 1) the ability to provide significant improvements in quality of care while reducing costs and 2) the technology is really cool.  While the former is more significant in improving our health care system, the latter is fueling investment and innovation in the hundreds of millions per year.  With new apps and devices coming to market seemingly without pause, it can be a challenge to for health care organizations to keep pace.

This session will focus on leveraging technology at the point of care and address:

  1. Technologies that have the biggest impact per dollar
  2. Options for patients or care providers without a smart phone
  3. Strategies for ensuring improved outcomes
  4. Maintaining off-site security

As health IT and Meaningful Use initiatives continue to make progress throughout the country, HIE initiatives have made great strides in the past year.  With over $500 million in state funding and even more in private investment, health information exchange is front of mind for everyone for providers and vendors alike.  With so much at stake, it is critical to understand the landscape, stakeholders and risks for any project.

This session will review and discuss the following areas:

  1. Creating a strategy to comply with Meaningful Use
  2. Stakeholder engagement – choosing the right partners
  3. Allocating your funds wisely
  4. Setting benchmarks to track progress

With a better concept of what the Final Rule for Stage 2 MU will look like, we can understand how the new criteria will build on Stage 1 and continue the drive toward excellence in quality & patient care.  While ‘meaningful use’ of health IT has long been cliché, the importance of improving safety and reducing costs remains paramount.

  1. Strategies for Stage 2 compliance
  2. Ensuring compliance leads to improvement
  3. Potential road blocks for Stage 2

10:00 - 10:45am Presentation "Health Information Exchange: Medical Research Rethought"

The spread of electronic health records throughout the healthcare spectrum, standardization of health data elements, HITECH and ARRA incentives all support the sharing of patient clinical information through Health Information Exchanges. By utilizing powerful and intuitive search engines like Google, Bing and Watson, how a clinician investigates information for a specific patient will dramatically change. Secondary use of clinical information from huge databases of health data will allow patients to receive customized treatment based on their specific characteristics, diseases, medications, genetic sequences, socioeconomic backgrounds and additional factors.

This session will address the following:

  1. Transitioning from data capture to data analysis
  2. Capturing data that will provide better care
  3. Strategies for data usage
